America loves coffee.
From a simple black cup o’ joe to a Grande mocha latte with extra whipped cream, it is a national obsession.
Go into any average-size city in this country and look around. Chain coffee shops, independent coffee shops, doughnut shops, fast-food chains – they all have coffee. It’s not just for breakfast anymore – Americans drink their coffee morning, afternoon and night.
And it goes far beyond wanting a plain cup of joe. Need a sweet afternoon snack at work that will also perk you up from after-lunch drowsiness? Chocolate-covered coffee and espresso beans are trendy right now and are sure to give you the boost you need, in every variety you can think of.
America is so obsessed that coffee has become a cultural icon and even necessity. Coffee merchandise is also very popular. Coffee mugs with phrases like “Best Dad Ever” and “Not Today, Satan” make for popular gift items, and insulated travel cups, t-shirts and home décor with coffee references can be purchased just about anywhere.
There are Facebook groups just for coffee lovers – and not just a few – there are dozens. We are a culture that simply can’t function without our beloved coffee.
And a growing way that people order coffee in our fast-paced society is through drive-thru lanes at their favorite caffeine connection.
People are constantly on the go and have to get to work, have to get to school, have to get to the airport. We’re always busy, always on the go. Java junkies need their joe, and they need it now – they’ve places to go and people to see.
The number of people being injured and maimed by hot coffee and/or hot tea spills – especially in restaurant drive-thru’s – is astonishing and it grows larger every day. There are so many cases of hot coffee and hot tea spills at restaurants that are never, or barely publicized – or that settle out of court – that most people have no idea how many lawsuits and injuries there are. There isn’t an accurate database that tracks these cases, but there are possibly dozens of these incidents that happen around the country every single day.
