It is not enough that restaurant industry employees just show up to work on time. Or as is far too often the case, even show up at all. That is only the beginning.

While at work, employees must also take accountability for their actions. Especially when it comes to safety, health and security. Restaurant premises safety needs responsible employees.

The same goes for managers and owners. If the leadership of a restaurant does not take accountability, it should be no surprise when the employees don’t either.

Employees and Management Have a Responsibility When It Comes to Restaurant Premises Safety

Restaurant employees have a responsibility to listen and learn from any and all training provided by their employer. They should be an active participant in learning the skills that are necessary for their job, including, but not limited to, the following measures:

  • If training is provided to them in a language or vocabulary that they do not understand.
  • Use of their previous experience, training, skills, education and common sense to be as safe as possible and to look out for possible hazards and dangerous conditions that may exist in the restaurant.
  • Employees should make suggestions whenever possible for ways to improve safety and health in the restaurant even if it does not specifically pertain to their job duties.
  • Offer solutions to problems that may exist regarding safety and health and their job tasks. Employees have a unique perspective and may know more about it than their supervisor in that they actually perform the job duties on a regular basis.
  • Employees should participate in safety committees and safety meetings and take health and safety very seriously.

When employees understand what is to be expected of them, they take a more active role and feel more confident, and their performance is greatly improved.  In turn, a much safer, healthier and more secure restaurant environment is created for everyone.

After all, the restaurant industry is supposed to be the “hospitality” business; and anyone who doesn’t seemingly care about the safety, health and security of others may be best advised to find another line of work.
