You may be surprised at the number of things that can go catastrophically wrong in a restaurant.

There are so many things, in fact, that 8 people per day die in a restaurant.

You read that right. 8. Every day.

You may be asking, “What in the world is going on in restaurants and bars?!?”

We hear that question all the time.

The best answer we can give you to is that mediocrity, below industry standard performance, and outright management neglect is what leaves restaurants and bars vulnerable to lawsuits and customers at increased risk of injury or death.

This below industry standard performance can result in:

Increasing Awareness of the Real Hazards When It Comes to Restaurant Liability

A part of our job here at Restaurant Expert Witness is to increase awareness of these types of incidents, to provide some basic insight on how best to deal with them after something bad has happened, and, most importantly, how to hopefully prevent them from happening in the first place, as most of these incidents are preventable.

The restaurant and bar industry, the industry that we so dearly love and have spent our career working in, is rife with incompetence, ignorance, apathy, and laziness. It would seem, based on the number of incidents, that a large percentage of owners and management-level personnel don’t have enough drive, ambition, or sense of responsibility to fix it. Many of those placed in charge of restaurant and bar premises, and the employees that work for them, lack basic dangerous condition awareness, basic safety and security training, and basic day-to-day operational and risk management training and education.

But it goes beyond that.

Quality management competency and management oversight, in many instances, are nearly nonexistent.

Sadly, this cesspool of mediocrity and below industry standard level of performance is putting us all at risk.

But make no mistake about it, restaurant industry employees, at every level, regardless of compensation, do not wake up in the morning wanting to do a lousy job. It’s the bad management to whom they report that inspires them to do that and puts them in that position.

The alternative is also true. Managers who truly care provide great oversight and are focused on meeting the industry standards and providing consistent day-to-day operational performance that leads to inspired employees wanting to do a great job for their boss and for the families that they work with and serve.

No matter what anyone tells you, or wants you to believe, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the workers, the workforce, or this generation or workers. The problem lies with the owners and management; those who are supposed to be in charge. They want your money, but they aren’t necessarily always willing to do the work the right way to get it. Of course, there are exceptions, many exceptions.

But it takes some expertise to figure out who those exceptions are.
