Ignorance of restaurant industry standards, safety, and security rules and the laws is not an acceptable excuse when people are maimed or killed. But people don’t know what they don’t know…right?
That is one of the reasons we decided to bring restaurant industry standards to light. We have grown weary of hearing people providing testimony at depositions or trials saying, “I don’t know”, when it is obvious that they certainly should know.
There are more slip and fall incidents in the restaurant industry than in any other industry doing business across this country. Slip and falls “are the number one cause of accidents in hotels, restaurants and public buildings according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics” (Willis).
These incidents aren’t just little accidents an establishment can write off and sweep under the rug. They result in lost money for establishments and companies through worker’s compensation claims, downtime of employees, lawsuit payouts, and even loss of customers; cause injuries which are sometimes life-changing and catastrophic; and at times can even cause loss of life.
From hands-on experience, we can tell you that the number of incidents occurring each year in restaurants and bars across America is truly mind-boggling. And for those of us that deal with them, it’s heartbreaking. These slip and fall incidents, accidents, events, and occurrences happen to employees, vendors, independent contractors, and customers from nearly every walk of life.
If we provide education, beyond just waiting for another multi-million-dollar lawsuit, we will more positively impact the industry, the people, and the world. We should all try to educate anyone that is willing to listen and learn.
